You will want to budget extra time when going to court. Traffic court can take hours depending on how many cases are on the calendar. The bad news is that you may be there through the lunch hour. The good news is there are plenty of delicious spots to visit within walking distance of the Marietta Square.

Be careful not to get a parking ticket while lunching!

What to Expect from an Unresolved Traffic Ticket

A bench warrant and license suspension are two of the most common consequences of a missed court date. The good news is, the courts will give drivers a brief reprieve immediately after the missed court date, so if you catch it within a few weeks, you may be safe.

If months have gone by, however, there will likely be both an outstanding bench warrant and license suspension.

Although it is not easy to check the status of a bench warrant online, drivers can readily check the status of their GA license at www.dds.georgia.gov.

Drivers should also note that there is no automatic reinstatement of a license when the FTA is lifted by the court. Rather, the driver must request a “912” form from the court clerk and submit it to DDS. Drivers who forget this step are at risk of being arrested for driving on a suspended license.

Be Wary of Super Speeder Citations

Your ticket may qualify as a “super speeder” ticket if you were driving:

  • 85 MPH or more on any road in Georgia; or
  • 75 MPH or more on any two-lane road.

You should be careful before pleading guilty to a super speeder ticket. Not only are there serious consequences for your driving record you may be facing additional fines. If you plead guilty to a super speeder citation you should expect to receive a notice from DDS advising you that you owe $200.00 and that failure to pay within 90 days will result in your license being suspended.

Entering a plea of “nolo” or a zero points order in the court will not avoid the imposition of the super speeder fee, and insurance will still see the speeding conviction on your record
